We are pleased to share our Carbon Markets: Indonesia guide, which examines Indonesia’s evolving carbon market framework and the opportunities it presents for businesses and investors.
Asia is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s most dynamic regions for carbon opportunities, with governments across the region developing carbon pricing mechanisms and carbon credit frameworks to support their climate ambitions, attract investment, and drive sustainable growth. The diversity in approach reflects both the complexity and the promise of Asia’s carbon sector.
Indonesia stands out as one of the most promising markets in this evolving landscape. With its vast natural resources, large energy sector, and commitment to achieving net-zero emissions, the country offers both scale and opportunity. The Government has introduced a comprehensive framework for carbon economic value, which provides for trading systems, offsets, result-based payments, and a forthcoming carbon tax.
Implementation has already begun, with a mandatory emissions trading system in the power sector, plans to expand into forestry and other high-emitting industries, and the launch of a domestic carbon exchange. Indonesia is also a leading supplier of nature-based credits, positioning it as an important player in both compliance and voluntary markets. While the framework is still developing, Indonesia’s potential to attract investment and shape the regional carbon market is significant.
This guide offers a practical, investor-oriented roadmap into Indonesia’s emerging carbon landscape and highlights, in particular, regulatory frameworks and investment opportunities to help businesses navigate and capture growth in this dynamic sector.
